AFC Asian Cup 2019 UAE Dates, Teams, Groups, Schedule

AFC Asian Cup 2019 is the 17th edition of the football tournament which will be held in the United Arab Emirates [UAE]. Top 24 football teams from Asia will play this competition. The start and end dates, teams, groups and schedule fixtures of matches have been announced. For the second time, UAE is going to host this competition. This is the first time that 24 teams will play the AFC Asian Cup. The winner of this competition will qualify for the FIFA Confederations Cup 2021 which will be held in Qatar just one year before the World Cup.

AFC Asian Cup 2019 UAE Dates

Start date: 5 January 2019

End date: 1 February 2019

Asian Cup’s opening game will be played on 5th January 2019 between the hosts UAE and Bahrain at the Zayed Sports City. The finalĀ is scheduled to be held on 1st February 2019. Australia are the defending Champions of the competition who won it for the first time in 2015.

Football Asian Cup 2019 Teams

In 2014, a proposal to merge the preliminary qualification rounds of the FIFA World Cup with those of the AFC Asian Cup was ratified by the AFC Committee. After a green signal, teams were able to qualify through World Cup qualifiers. After missing past editions teams like India, Syria, Thailand, and Turkmenistan qualified for the tournament. This is the first appearance of Indian National Football Team in AFC Asian Cup after 2011.

Qualified teams: United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Qatar, Iran, Japan, Thailand, South Korea, Uzbekistan, Iraq, Syria, China PR, India, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, North Korea, Jordan, Vietnam, Palestine, Oman, Bahrain, Turkmenista, Philippines, and Yemen.

Kyrgyzstan, Philippines, and Yemen are the debutants of the competition. For the first time in the history of the AFC Asian Cup, there will be 24 teams.

All 24 national football teams are divided into 6 groups of 4 teams each. Top 2 teams from each group will directly qualify for the knock-out stage of the competition. Four best third-place teams will also qualify for the next round which round of 16. So, in this way, 16 teams will play the round of 16.

  • Group A: United Arab Emirates, Thailand, India
  • Group B: Australia, Syria, Palestine, Jordan
  • Group C: South Korea, China PR, Kyrgyzstan, Philippines
  • Group D: Iran, Iraq, Vietnam, Yemen
  • Group E: Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Lebanon, North Korea
  • Group F: Japan, Uzbekistan, Oman, Turkmenistan

The round of 16 games will be played from 20 Jan to 22 Jan followed by quarter-finals on 24 and 25 Jan. There will be semifinals on 28 and 29 Jan. Final on 1 Feb.
