All groups of FIFA World Cup 2018 are set to compete for the title in Russia. There are total 8 Groups from A to H which are featured with 4 teams each in 2018 FWC. FIFA organized a draw through which all 32 qualified teams of 2018 Football World Cup were divided into eight groups. How many groups are there in 2018 FIFA World Cup?
Total groups: 8 [4 teams each]
Just like previous editions of World Cup, this edition will be also played by 32 teams. All these teams are divided into 8 groups having 4 teams each. Out of these 32 national football teams, 20 teams are playing consecutive edition after 2014 FIFA World Cup. Groups are named from A to H. Defending Champions Germany are in Group F with Mexico, Sweden, and South Korea. Five times World Champions are in Group E who will play against Switzerland, Costa Rica and Serbia.
Which team is in which group of FIFA World Cup 2018?
There will be a round-robin game in the group stage. Each team of each group will play against each team. Two top teams with maximum points will qualify for the round of 16. Starting from Group A, host Russia will play against Uruguay, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia.
Group A: Russia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Uruguay
One team each from UEFA, AFC, CAF, and CONMEBOL will play in this group. Uruguay is the most experienced team in this group as the nation has played 12 editions of FIFA World Cup. Saudi Arabia did not play in last two editions of World Cup but qualified this time. Since 1990, this is the first qualification of Egypt in Football World Cup.
Russia: The host nation has played 10 FIFA World Cups and this is their 11th appearance in the finals. After failing to qualify for 2006 and 2010 editions, Russia qualified for last World Cup which was held in Brazil. They did not win any game in the group stage and finished the competition at the 24th spot. This time, they’ll have great home support.
Saudi Arabia: Being runners-up of AFC Third Round Group B, Saudi Arabia qualified for World Cup for the 5th time. The three times Asian Cup champions did not proceed beyond the round of 16 that they achieved in 1994.
Egypt: Seven times African Champions have played 2 editions of this competition. In their last two attempts, Egypt failed to qualify for the next round. Their best success in the World Cup came in 1934 FIFA World Cup when they finish at 13th position.
Uruguay: The most experienced and the first favorite of this group. Two times World Champions Uruguay are playing 13th FIFA World Cup. They finished the round robin of CONMEBOL qualifiers at the second spot and qualified directly to the finals.
Group B: Portugal, Spain, Morocco and Iran
This group is considered as the toughest and most exciting group of the competition. Two top national Football teams are there in the form of Portugal and Spain. Both teams are from same Confederation i.e. UEFA. Being World Champions in 2010, Spain failed to qualify for the round of 16 in the last edition. Other two teams Morocco and Iran are making the 5th appearance in World Cup.
Group C: France: Australia, Peru, and Denmark
Another group of two teams from UEFA Confederation. France and Denmark are the European teams who will play against Australia and Peru also. Experienced France is going to make the 15th appearance while remaining three teams are playing World Cup for the fifth time. France lifted the Prestigious trophy in 1998.
Group D: Argentina, Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria
Iceland shocked the Football World in 2016 during UEFA Euro. They continued their brilliant performance and qualified for FIFA World Cup for the first time. Yes, Iceland will play their first ever World Cup match against Argentina on 16th June.
Group E: Brazil, Switzerland, Costa Rica and Serbia
It would not be incorrect in saying that this group has maximum experience of playing the World Cup. Brazil has qualified for this tournament for the 21st time, Switzerland is making the 11th appearance followed by Costa Rica and Serbia 5th and 12th appearance respectively.
Group F: Germany, Mexico, Sweden and South Korea
Defending World Champions Germany needs to go through Mexico, South Korea, and Sweden to defend their title. Except for Sweden, all three teams played the last edition in Brazil. After 2006, Sweden made come back in the competition.
Group G: Belgium, Panama, Tunisia, and England
Group G is the 7th group of 2018 FIFA World Cup which consists of a debut team. The second debut team of World Cup is Panama. Matches of this group will be played from 18 to 28 June 2018. Belgium and England both played in Brazil World Cup, while Tunisia missed last two editions. Let’s see who will advance to next round.
Group H: Poland, Senegal, Colombia and Japan
Here comes the last group of Football World Cup. Group H consists of each team from UEFA, CAF, CONMEBOL, and AFC. Colombia and Japan will play the first game of this group. Winners of this group will play against runners-up of Group G and runners-up will play against winners of Group G.
