The Indian broadcasting rights of La Liga 2018-19 season have been announced. Fans from India will be able to watch Spanish league matches on Facebook. Yes, this season of the Spanish football league will be aired on the social networking website known as Facebook. The social media have acquired the Indian broadcasting rights of the competition. This is the first time Facebook is covering a sporting event for the Indian viewers after missing the previous digital rights bid for Indian Premier League.

The La Liga 2018-19 is set to begin from 17 August 2018. Barcelona are the defending champions of the competition who won the 25th title last season. Huesca, Rayo Vallecano and Real Valladolid are the new promoted teams for this season.
Facebook will also provide the broadcast of La Liga matches to the Indian subcontinents as it holds the digital rights of the competition. No words have been spoken about the Indian TV channels to cover the broadcast.
Earlier, Sony Pictures Networks had the rights of both digital and TV rights but there are now confirmations by the network for this season. A spoke-person from Sony stated that they had decided to drop La Liga rights due the price tag. SPN had acquired the La Liga rights for $32 million for four years in 2014 that ran till May 2018.
Facebook also bagged the broadcasting rights for the Premier League in the four Southeast Asian markets. The social network has also acquired Premier League rights Vietnam for three seasons, from 2019-20 to 2021-22.
The broadcasting rights holder will cover the La Liga in English commentary. It is expected to provide live broadcast of at-least one game per week.
Peter Hutton, the former chief executive of Eurosport is now the head of Facebook’s global live sports programming. Former MD of Eleven Sports, Biswas has taken the charge of Facebook’s sports and entertainment portfolio in the Asian market.
La Liga is affected by the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo who is now a Juventus player and will play Serie A in Italy. Facebook have also won the digital rights of Serie A in some countries.
Facebook will show La Liga games for free to India and its sub-continents which are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Maldives, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. There are about 348 million users in all these nations. It is also declared that Facebook will show all 380 matches for the new season.
Jose Antonio Cachaza, La Liga’s country manager for India said “This is the first step for us. We’re excited to see it and we want make it as successful as possible so we can unlock other territories around the World.”
