Julen Lopetegui has been sacked as Spain coach
The news came after Real Madrid announced Julen Lopetegui as their new coach after Zidane’s departure. 21 days ago, Lopetegui signed a new contract with Spanish team until 2020.
Spain’s President and head coach were due to appear at a press conference at the Krasnodar Stadium but it was delayed amid reports the national team head coach would be leaving his post immediately.
RFEF President Rubiales revealed he had only been told of Real’s decision five minutes before they announced Lopetegui’s appointment. He said
“The negotiation occurred without the RFEF having any information. The Spain team is the team of all Spaniards. You can’t do things this way, two or three days before the World Cup. We have been obliged to make this decision.”
There are rumours that Lopetegui would remain manager for the duration of the World Cup after the players – led by Sergio Ramos – tried to arrange an intervention and demanded that he stay.
Lopetegui appointed as Spain’s head coach after Vicente del Bosque’s retirement two years ago. The 51-years old assisted Spain to reach the finals as group winners with a stunning 3-0 home win against four times World Champions Italy.
Spain will enter the competition as one of the favourites. They will be facing European Champions Portugal in their opening game of the World Cup.
